It is Dussehra tomorrow, one of the biggest Hindu festivals in the country. Vijay Dashami or Dussehra is celebrated all across the nation in different ways. This one is a really special festival for us because it celebrates the victory of good over evil.
It is the day when Lord Rama killed Ravana and returned to his kingdom. The day is considered auspicious because it symbolises the conquest of good over evil. When the effigies of Ravana, Meghnath, and Kumbhkaran are burnt, we celebrate the power of goodness and humanity.
The day is called Dussehra because it happened after 10 days of battle between Lord Rama and demon Ravana who had abducted Sita, Ram's wife. The day is also called Vijay Dashami which means the 10th day of victory.
It is also believed that the word Dussehra is derived from Sanskrit words- 'dasha' and 'hara' where Dasha means 10 heads of demon Ravana and hara means defeat.
According to Bengali culture, this day celebrates the victory of Maa Durga over the buffalo demon - Mahishasura. The battle between Goddess Durga and Mahishasura went on till 9 days and on the 10th day, she defeated the demon. On the 10th day, Maa Durga is worshipped. This is the last day of Durga Puja and the idols of Maa Durga are immersed in water. This marks Goddess Durga's journey back to her home.

Why Is Vijay Dashami celebrated after Navratri?
It is believed that Maa Durga fought with demon Mahishasura during the nine days of Navratri and she killed her on the 10th day. The day is an extended celebration of goodness.
On the other hand, Lord Rama fought with Ravana killed the 10-head demon Ravana the day after Ram Navami and thus Dussehra is celebrated the next day after Ram Navami.
