Vidya Balan is one of the very few actors in Bollywood who has unabashedly talked about flaunting her curves despite not fitting the patriarchal beauty standards. She has always encouraged women to own their bodies and love themselves irrespective of what society has to say about them.

Her recent Instagram post is all about learning to love every part of your body. Despite all its imperfections, because it makes us who we are.

The actor shared an incident where one of her fans insisted on taking a second picture with her because the previous one did not show the ‘beautiful’ side of her face.

When her manager promptly told her that she had already taken a picture, the fan told her, “galat side se liya, main achchi nahi lag rhi, yeh post nhi kar paungi (The picture was taken from the wrong side, I am not looking beautiful and won’t be able to post it).”

Looking at her relentless pursuit, Balan was obliged to click another image with her. It made her think of the times she had preferred her left profile over the right. She wrote, “Overtime as I started on this journey of trying to love & accept myself a little more on each day, I realised that liking one profile meant liking one part of me to the exclusion of the other.”

She said that liking the left side meant she disliked the right side. Reminiscing about old times, she confessed to requesting photographers and cinematographers to refrain from shooting her right side.

“I would be scared if someone shot me from the right because I thought it was my ugly side. It was almost like the fear of being found out,” she further wrote.

She further stated that today, she practices loving and accepting every part of her body, ‘all of her’. “I don’t care where I’m being shot from, I’m no longer scared of anyone seeing that side of me,” Balan added.

She wrote that not only does she like her right profile today, but she loves it because it is never going to change. It will remain constant. “What changed is the way I looked at myself, and that changed how I see myself.”

She went to her room and took a selfie without makeup, flaunting both sides of her face. “I like me just the way I am,” she mentioned.

She encouraged women who preferred one side of their face over the other to click selfies like her and flaunt them in ‘full glory’.

We often grow up seeking validation from people who tell us what side of our face or part of our body looks better over the other. In the pursuit of posting the perfect images on social media, we often start neglecting a part of ourselves, and soon, it becomes the ugly side that even we don’t like to see.

The only way to counter it is to practice loving every bit of yourself like Vidya Balan. She considers herself beautiful, irrespective of what anyone has to say. That should be the way forward for every person struggling to accept the flaws and imperfections of their bodies.
