Karwachauth celebrations are incomplete without married women rotating their beautifully decorated Thalis while sitting in big circles. The ritual is believed to bring positivity and new energy into the lives of women fasting for their husbands.
While moving the Thalis in a clockwise direction, women sing a popular Punjabi folk song, especially in the northern parts of India. The song 'Veero Kudiye Karwada' celebrates the women fasting, the lyrics symbolise togetherness, the bond married women share.
Veero Kudiye Karwada Lyrics
After performing Karwa Chauth puja, women fasting pass their puja Thalis to each other and sing this traditional song. The song is usually sung by a woman priest at a temple or home.
Veero Kudiye Karwada
Sarv Suhagan Karwada
Aye Katti Naa Teri Naa
Kumbh Chrakhra Feri Naa
Gwand Pair Payeen Naa
Sui Cha Dhaga Payi Naa

Suthra Jagayeen Naa
Bahaein Pyari Veera
Chan Chadde Te Pani Peena

Aar Pair Payeen Bhee
Ruthda Maniyen Bhee

Meaning Of Veero Kudiye Karwada
The song revolves around the taboos women should keep in mind while fasting, these are things married women are restricted to do on the day of Karwachauth. For instance, 'Kumbh charakhra feri naa' means don't weave clothes on this day, 'ruthda maniyen naa' translates to don't try to please anyone upset with you.
Another restriction is 'Suthra jagayi naa' which means don't awaken someone asleep. The second verse speaks of the lifting of all the restrictions imposed on the married women and it also hints after the fast.
After the song ritual, married women seek the blessings of their mother-in-law, and gift them presents. A lot of women have a ritual of drinking a glass of juice or a cup of tea prepared by their mother-in-law. Post this, women await the moonrise and finally, the culmination rituals follow.
