The Legend of Vat Purnima Vrat
According to the legend, King Ashvapati, the ruler of the Madra kingdom and his wife did not have any children for a long time. Once, one sage suggested both of them perform puja in the honour of Sun God Savitr. The deity was pleased with the couple's dedication and bestowed them a daughter, whom they called Savitri in honour of the deity. Despite being born to a king, the girl grew up with an ascetic life.
The king requested Savitri to find a suitable partner for herself. Savitri met Satyavan, the son of blind King Dyumatsena, while looking for a life partner. When she told her father about her decision, Narad Muni interfered and informed them that Satyavan's death was certain in a year's time. Her father asked her to reconsider her choice and told her to find someone else. But she refused her father's decision and married Satyavan. They moved to the forest where his parents were living. Savitri began fasting three days before the fateful day and then accompanied her husband to the forest on the specified day. Satyavan died after he fell from a banyan tree while cutting wood. Yama, the ruler of death, comes to take Satyavan's soul. It is believed that Savitri continued to follow Yama and refused to hand her husband to Yama. Savitri followed Yama for three days, and that made Yama soften and ask her to wish for anything other than her husband's life. She asked her to restore her father-in-law's kingdom and his vision and a hundred children with Satyavan. The last wish of Savitri puts Yama in a dilemma. But Yama was impressed by Savitri's dedication and bestowed her husband's life.
