In a press conference held at the Oval Office on Friday, former U.S. President Donald Trump responded to a question about the definition of a woman, sparking widespread discussion. The question, which touches on key issues surrounding gender identity and transgender rights, was posed in the context of Women’s History Month and the administration's approach to gender issues.

Donald Trump's Response To ‘What is a Woman’ Statement

When asked "What is a woman?" by a reporter during an event connected to Women's History Month, the President responded with his characteristic blend of humour and directness.

"Well, it's sort of easy for me," Trump replied as laughter filled the room. "A woman is somebody who can have a baby under any circumstances. She has a quality. A woman is a person who is much smarter than a man, I've always found. A woman is a person that doesn't give a man even a chance of success."

The conversation quickly shifted to the contentious issue of transgender athletes in women's sports, with Trump maintaining his firm opposition.

"The other day, I watched a well-known Democratic congressman fighting for men to be allowed to compete in women's sports. I say, I hope they keep that going because they never won another election. That's a big yeah," Trump remarked, aiming for Democratic positions on transgender rights.

Trump called the inclusion of transgender women in female athletic competitions "ridiculous and very unfair," reinforcing his administration's stance on the matter.

Administration's Broader Gender Policy Framework

Trump's comments align with his administration's consistent approach to gender identity issues. On his first day in office, he signed an executive order defining a woman as "an adult human female" and females as "persons who, at conception, are of the sex which produces large reproductive cells."

This order instructed federal agencies to recognise only two genders—male and female—and to cease funding programmes that promote what the administration terms "gender ideology."

The State Department under Trump also revised passport policies to ensure gender markers accurately reflect biological sex, contrasting sharply with the Biden administration's introduction of an "X" gender-neutral option.

Trump Defending Women's Sports

The President emphasised his concerns about fairness in athletic competition, stating, "Women have suffered greatly because of the participation of male-born players in women's sports. The whole situation is not only unjust but also insulting to women."

According to a media report, Trump insisted that maintaining clear distinctions between male and female categories is essential for fair competition. "It's outrageous. It's unfair. And it undermines the years of hard work and dedication that female athletes put into their sports," he added.
