The fight for menstrual leaves has been going on for years, however, over the last few, we have seen some wins with a number of companies incorporating them into their leave policy and a number of universities in India giving attendance relaxation to female students. Punjab University
Recently, the Punjab University in Chandigarh declared a new policy which will allow female students to take menstrual leaves. Approved by the Vice Chancellor of Punjab University, the policy will come into effect from the upcoming semesters of the academic session 2024-25. However, the students cannot avail of these leaves for any examinations, including mid-semester and end-semester exams, internal or external, or practical exams.
National Law Institute University
The National Law Institute University in Bhopal introduced the menstrual leave policy a significant step towards promoting inclusivity, earlier this year. However, female students availing the menstrual leave are mandated to maintain an aggregate of 65% final attendance, as per the policy.

Gauhati University
Last year, the Gauhati University in Assam allowed two per cent relaxation to female students on account of menstrual discomforts. The official statement from the university read, “Following the directives of MWCD, the Vice-Chancellor is pleased to allow relaxation of 2% for female students as menstrual leave in minimum class attendance for the academic departments of Gauhati University as well as for the affiliated colleges.” An official said, “Menstrual health is an important issue which should be taken care of with sensitivity.”

Cochin University
The Cochin University in Kerala was the first known university in India to announce menstrual leave for students. The policy is applicable to all female students of the university (Universities For Fashion Studies) regardless of their streams and courses.
