Newly elected Trinamool Congress lawmakers, Mimi Chakraborty and Nusrat Jahan were seen sporting pants and tops on their maiden visit to the Parliament on Monday. Mimi and Nusrat’s sartorial choices, however, were trolled by many on social media. It turns out their choice of attire did not go down very well with certain sections of the society, with people commenting that the actor-lawmakers were not “appropriately dressed” for the Parliament. Thankfully, both Mimi and Nusrat found support from many others who welcomed the change in clothing style in parliament, a welcome sight, a far cry from the usual six yards that India’s female politicians are seen wearing.
Trolls commented that Mimi Chakraborty “is not suitable for the position,” and even added that the “parliament is not a photo studio”.
It seemed that Indians seemed to have a fixed idea of what MPs should look like and the young lawmakers’ western clothes and chic style seem to baffle them. There were some who reminded the actors that the Parliament is not a film set where they could pose while many others called them “a disgrace to the exalted office” that they have been elected to. Some users even slut shamed the newly elected lawmakers and said – “Parliament is not place for porn star.” The tweet was later deleted by the user.
In fact, one social media even implored, “Did you go there to do this drama? Please do not do this drama at the Parliament and shame Bengal.”
However, not all looked bleak. There were those who praised Nusrat for her “attitude” and told her to “work like a lioness”. In fact, the Managing Director and Chief Editor of CVoter, an Indian international polling agency, took to Twitter to write, “Even I just can’t unsee this. Absolutely classy, adorable, fresh, young, dynamic next-gen leadership that India has got. She represents her generation. And she must wear this identity proudly on her sleeves.”
Tollywood actress Swastika Mukherjee took to Twitter to support the newly elected MPs and said, "Code of parliament doesn't say 'jeans not allowed...'."
Priyanka Chaturvedi, former Congress spokesperson who joined Shiv Sena last month, also came in support of the new actor-turned-lawmakers and said, "Dear @mimichakraborty and @nusratchirps, firstly many congratulations for your debut in the parliament and secondly I loved what you both are wearing, in tune with the changing times :) Keep rocking!"
Another user wrote, “I think its time to get out of stereotypes. Even there shouldn’t be any dress codes for politicians if at all they have any. Enough of kurta pajama. They should go with jeans and hoodie (sic).”

Another user posted, “It is amazing we are worried about the dress politicians wear rather than be worried about all the criminals in the parliament. What to wear, what to eat is ones prerogative and no one else has a right to interfere.”
Out of 42 lawmakers that West Bengal sends to Lok Sabha, Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress had fielded 17 of its seats to women in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.
Mimi Chakraborty won the Jadavpur seat by a margin of roughly 2.95 lakh votes, while Nusrat Jahan won the Bashirhat seat by a margin of nearly 3.50 lakh votes. Interestingly, this was by far the biggest win as compared to other candidates in Bengal.
