If you have a jade plant at home, you might be wondering: ‘How do I care for my jade plant during the colder months?’ With the winter season in its full swing, it’s important to adjust your plant care routine to ensure that it stays healthy and thrives throughout the season. While jade plants are known for their resilience and ability to survive in various conditions, they need a little extra attention in winter to avoid common problems. We got in touch with Subhas, a local gardener from Ghaziabad where he shared some tips for beginner gardeners. Here are some essential tips to keep your jade plant healthy this winter season:
5 Tips To Take Care of Jade Plant In Winter Season
1. Watering Needs
One of the most common mistakes people make in winter is overwatering their jade plant. Overwatering can lead to root rot, a problem that’s especially common in winter when the plant’s roots are not actively growing. To keep your jade plant healthy, always check the soil with your finger. If it feels dry, it’s time to water it accordingly. During winter, remember that jade plants need less water, so avoid overwatering. Remember, it’s better to be underwater than overwater during the winter months.
2. Provide Adequate Light
Jade plants love sunlight, and they need as much natural light as possible, especially in winter when the days are shorter. The gardener says, “Jade plants need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. Place your jade plant near a south-facing window where it can get plenty of bright, indirect light. Keep a check on leaves to make sure they are not getting yellow.”
3. Maintain A Comfortable Temperature
Jade plants prefer warmer temperatures, they should not be exposed to sudden temperature drops. Keep your jade plant in a room with a steady temperature, ideally between 60°F and 75°F (15°C to 24°C). If the plant is close to a window, make sure it’s not getting too cold during the night.

4. Humidity Control
Winter air can be quite dry, and jade plants aren’t particularly fond of humidity. However, if you live in an area where the air gets very dry, you might want to increase the humidity around your plant. A simple way to do this is by placing a tray filled with water and pebbles near the plant. As the water evaporates, it will raise the humidity around your jade plant (Just be careful not to overdo it).

5. Avoid Fertilising
In winter, your jade plant is in a dormant phase, meaning it isn’t actively growing. This means it doesn't need fertiliser. The gardener says, “Applying fertiliser during the colder months can stress the plant and cause it to grow too quickly, which can lead to weak growth. Save fertilising for the spring or summer season when the plant is actively growing, and only fertilise during the growing season when the plant needs the nutrients.”
With a little care and attention, you can ensure that your jade plant thrives throughout the winter season.
