Have you ever thought about growing fresh herbs in your garden during the winter months? With the right knowledge and planning, winter gardening can provide you with a variety of flavourful and useful herbs, even when temperatures drop and with less sunlight. To know more on this we got in touch with a local gardener from Ghaziabad, Subhas. So whether you have a small balcony garden or a large outdoor space, there are plenty of herbs that can flourish during India’s winter months. Let's take a look at the best herbs suitable for winter gardening:
5 Best Herbs To Grow In The Winter Season
1. Coriander (Cilantro)
Coriander is one of the most popular herbs in India, used in nearly every cuisine for its refreshing aroma. “Winter is the perfect season for growing coriander as it grows well in cooler weather. The herb grows quickly and can be easily planted from seeds”, as shared by the gardener. It requires plenty of sunlight, but it can tolerate the mild winter chill, especially in areas with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C. Then you can easily use the freshly grown coriander in chutneys, curries, and garnishes.
2. Mint
Mint is another herb that you can easily grow in the winter season. It thrives in cool, well-drained soil and can be grown in containers or directly in the ground. “The cool temperatures of winter help mint grow well without the overpowering heat of summer. This herb can be grown year-round and can be planted as an indoor or outdoor plant”, says the gardener. Mint is great for making fresh mint chutney, tea, or adding a refreshing kick to salads and curries.
3. Fenugreek
Fenugreek, or methi, is a staple herb in Indian kitchens, known for its bitter flavour and a lot of health benefits as well. The gardener shared, “Methi grows best during the winter season as this herb requires a cool climate for better growth. It's easy to grow, requires minimal space, and can be planted in small pots or garden beds.” Fenugreek seeds are essential for tempering and making spice blends in Indian households.

Rosemary is another herb that can be grown easily in winter, though it requires some protection in colder regions. It requires a cool winter but does not do well in extremely cold climates. Also, this herb thrives in containers, making it a great option for an indoor garden. In areas with harsh winters, it’s best to grow rosemary in containers so you can move it indoors whenever necessary. If planted outdoors, you should consider using fabric covers to shield the plant from extremely cold weather.

5. Chives
Chives are known for their hardiness because they are hardy perennials and can survive in winter months well if taken care of properly. Chives can thrive in both warm and cold temperatures. They grow best in moist, well-drained, and nutrient-rich soil. It's a good idea to start sowing the seeds indoors about four to six weeks before the arrival of winter. Once the seedlings are around two inches tall, you can transplant them outside. You can harvest them as needed, making them a great winter staple.
