Summers may be brutal, especially for people who live on the top floors of buildings. And if, by some miracle, the air conditioning fails, you'll be a hot mess. However, there are a few things you can do to keep your home cool during the summer. Let us use air conditioners less and practise sustainable living more in light of the effects of climate change. Take a look at this:
1. Dark Rooms
Shield your room from direct sunlight throughout the day to keep it naturally and comfortably cool. Remember to close windows around 10:00 a.m., when the summer heat becomes more intense. Make your space dark and shady by drawing blackout curtains. Open the windows in the evening to allow the cool breeze to fill your room.
2. Wet Curtains
Try this approach if you want the effect of an air conditioner without having to own one. Fill a bucket with water and submerge the hems of the curtains in it, allowing the fabric to absorb the water until the entire curtain is saturated. Then, as normal, turn on the fan and go about your business; any breeze outside will cool your room.
3. Cool Lighting
Electronics gadgets produce heat, so use them sparingly. When you're not using a gadget, make sure it's turned off so it doesn't add to the room's temperature. Switching to cooler lights is the most effective approach to minimise heat indoors. LEDs and fluorescent lights should be used instead of incandescent bulbs because they create a lot of heat.

4. Cotton Fabric
Summer isn't the best season to show off your expensive fabric or faux leather interior. Cotton should not only be used for clothing, but also for curtains, bedsheets, bedcovers, and sofa covers. White or light pastel colours should be used for upholstery and bedsheets. Cotton is a natural material that allows the cloth to breathe by allowing air to move through it.

5. Keeping Plants Near Windows
The most natural way to chill your environment is to use indoor plants. Placing a few potted plants near the window sill or balcony where the sun shines the brightest will protect you from the heat while also providing much-needed light to the plants. But make sure it's a plant that can withstand a lot of sun. Plants absorb heat and use it to cool the environment.
