Over 400 Single-Screen Theatres To Shut Down In Telangana: Here’s What You Need To Know

Given heavy losses due to the absence of patronage, over 400 single-screen cinema theatre owners in Telangana have decided to temporarily stop film screenings from this week. More than 400 theatres will be shut down in the state shutting down for 10 days from Friday (May 17). Vijayender Reddy, the president of the State film exhibitors association said the single-screen theatre owners individually took the decision to stop screening.“Theatres in Telangana state will shut down from May 17th for 10 days and it is likely to be extended,” says Reddy

“The collections for recent films have gone from bad to worse and theatre business has become a risky proposition,” he adds.

Reason Behind Mass Theatre Shutdown

Reportedly, Reddy informed that audiences are reluctant to turn up at theatres despite big promotions by makers and more than 40-odd films have sank without a trace in the last few months. “Footfalls in theatres have gone down drastically and some are attributing them to IPL matches, summer heat and also elections in the two Telugu states. Nonetheless, exhibitors have suffered a lot and don’t want to run shows for a few weeks,” he adds.

“Expenditure per day for them is to the tune of ₹ 10,000 to ₹ 12,000 in small towns and between ₹ 15,000 and ₹ 18,000 in Hyderabad. However, the revenue per day, especially in the case of small cinemas, is not even ₹ 4,000. The loss is about ₹ 4,000 per day if the theatre is closed, while it would go up to about ₹ 6,000 if a film is screened. The decision to halt the screenings would be in force for at least two weeks. The screenings have already been stopped in some theatres in the state,” said Reddy.

Theatre Owners Might Start Screening Against Upfront Payment

Reddy also mentioned that theatre owners might get ready to start screening films if any producers come forward and make an upfront payment as a business transaction. In such a scenario, the screening would continue if there is patronage. There are no major films scheduled for release till June 15, 2024.
