SS Rajamouli’s RRR Begins Oscar Journey; Jr NTR-Ram Charan Starrer To Enter Academy Race

RRR’s Oscar campaign has kickstarted. The SS Rajamouli directorial has been submitted for the For Your Consideration campaign in all major categories for the upcoming Academy Awards. The campaign was launched on Friday, September 30, 2022, with a massive screening at the Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles.

Confirming the news to The Indian Express, a Variance Films representative listed the categories in which RRR has been submitted. The categories include Best Picture (DVV Danayya), Best Director (Rajamouli), Best Actor (Jr NTR and Ram Charan), Best Actress (Alia Bhatt), Best Supporting Actor (Ajay Devgn), Screenplay, Original Song, Score, Editing, Cinematography, Sound, Production Design, and VFX, among others. While Naatu Naatu has been submitted in the Best Original Song category.

When the race for India’s official entry to the Oscars had begun, netizens had flooded social media claiming that RRR deserved to be India’s official Oscar entry. Some also wanted The Kashmir Files to make it to the Oscars. However, Pan Nalin’s Gujarati film Chhello Show was finalised to represent India in the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards 2023. A selection committee set up by the Film Federation of India chose the Gujarati coming-of-age drama film Chhello Show which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2021, and will be released in Indian theatres on October 14, 2022. The film is “set at the cusp of the digital revolution and follows a nine-year-old boy ensnared by the magic and science of light and shadow that lies behind celluloid film projection.”

Reportedly, RRR, Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files, Sajimon Prabhakar’s Malayankunju, and Rahul Sankrityan’s Shyam Singha Roy competed with Chhello Show to become the official entry. India had sent PS Vinothraj’s Tamil-language Koozhangal (Pebbles) as the official entry to Oscars in 2022.

RRR was one of the biggest box office hits of this year after collecting an estimated ₹1,150–1,200 crores. Set in 1920, the film revolves around two real-life Indian revolutionaries, Alluri Sitarama Raju (Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Rama Rao), and their fight against the British Raj. It also explores the undocumented period in their lives when both the revolutionaries chose to go into obscurity before they began the fight for their country.
