This is also found in mythological depictions, in which Lord Krishna was seen offering Alta at the feet of his beloved Radha. It is believed that its history goes back to the Mahabharata period.

Another notable thing said about the importance of Alta is that its colour is red which is a symbol of prosperity. When any married woman applies Alta to her feet, it is considered a symbol of prosperity for her and her family.
