Senior actress Sharmila Tagore married into a family which was not even close to the Bengali home she was brought up into. Her habits were different, way of living was different but adjustments from both sides made life easier for both. Now when she became a mother-in-law to Kareena Kapoor Khan, it was her and Kareena's understanding which played a major role. Sharmila gave a tip or two on how a daughter in law should be treated and how a mother in law can make a newly married couple's life and a new daughter's life peaceful and easier. Here is what she said.

Speaking on the second season ofKareena Kapoor Khan's radio podcast 'What Women Want', Sharmila Tagore, who married Mansoor Ali Khan in 1969, spoke at length on the difference between adaughter and daughter-in-law and how a mother-in-law should deal with a newly married couple.

Sharmila said, "Well, a daughter is someone you’ve grown up with, right? So you know her temperament, you know what makes her angry and how to deal with that person. You’re meeting your daughter-in-law when she is an adult already and you don’t quite know what her temperament is like, so it takes time to gel. The new girl, your daughter-in-law, is coming to your house so you need to welcome her and make her more comfortable.”

Taking her example from the past, Sharmila reminisced the time when she had married Tiger Pataudi. She said “I remember when I got married… I am a Bengali, I like my rice. And they were all roti-phulka eating people. I love my fish and Tiger hated fish. You know, that kind of adjustment. They seem very minor but they are not really, in the long run,”

Giving her take on how mothers-in-law should not interfere too much in newly married couples' lives, the 75-year-old said: “If I say, ‘When my son was young, this is what he liked and this is his favourite dish’… All that showing off can be a bane. You should allow their relationship to grow more than try and take over."

The veteran actress just recently celebrated her 75th birthday in Jaipur, Rajasthan with family.
