Shardiya Navratri Nine Colour : 9 Colours Assigned To Each Day And Their Significance

During the nine days of Navratri, we worship nine forms of Durga. Each Goddess celebrates femininity and the strength of womanhood. Each day also has a colour dedicated to it, and here is what it means.

The celebrations of Shardiya Navratri 2023 have begun and how. From garba nights being organised in Gujarat to pandals being set up in West Bengal, this is one of the most important festivals for Hindus. It marks the change in the season as people brace themselves to welcome the cold winds of winter.

Did you know that each day is assigned a different colour and dedicated to different forms of Goddess Durga? According to devotees, each colour has its significance. Take note.

Day 1 October 15, 2023: Orange

Day one of Shardiya Navratri is dedicated to Maa Shailputri who is believed to bless her devotees with prosperity and wealth. She is the daughter of Mountain King Himavat.

She symbolises the power of a woman and is often depicted flaunting a crescent moon, and two hands. She is seen mounted on a bull, Nandi. The orange colour associated with her symbolises elements of Earth.

Day 2 October 16, 2023: White

Day two is dedicated to Maa Brahmacharini, who is often seen wearing white clothes. She is depicted holding a kamandalu in her left hand and a japamala in her right. She signifies womanhood, and the white colour stands for purity. According to Vedic texts, she is someone who pursues sacred knowledge of religion.

On the third day, devotees worship Maa Chandraghanta who has a third eye like Lord Shiva, however, unlike him, hers is always open. She is believed to help her devotees overcome physical suffering, distress, hurdles, and mental issues.

She is often displayed wearing red colour, which also signifies love and passion. It denotes positive energy and liveliness.

Day 4 October 18, 2023: Royal Blue

On the fourth day, people worship Maa Kushmanda who is referred to as the original power of the universe. She is radiant like the sun and has eight hands to carry an arrow, nectar-filled pot, bow, lotus, mace, chakra, and kamandal. Her eighth hand is often blessing her devotees with prosperity and a good life.

She is often seen wearing blue-coloured clothes that signify strength and stability. It is also the colour of royalty, dignity, and elegance.

Day 5 October 19, 2023: Yellow

On the fifth day of Shardiya Navratri, people worship Skandamata who derives her name from Kartikeya, son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. She is often depicted sitting on a lion in a fearless position protecting her son.

She is often seen wearing yellow clothes that signify power, salvation, treasures, and prosperity. Therefore, her devotees worship wearing yellow coloured clothes to seek her blessings.

Day 6 October 20, 2023: Green

The sixth day is dedicated to Goddess Katyayani who is believed to be the fiercest form of Goddess Durga. The green colour associated with her signifies growth, new beginnings, and fertility.

On day seven, devotees offer prayers to Maa Kalratri. She is a form of Goddess Durga associated with destruction. She is also known as Goddess Mahakali, Bhairavi, Kali, Chamunda, Mrityu Rudrani, Chandi, Durga, and Chamundi. The subtle grey colour represents mystery.

Day 8 October 22, 2023: Purple

The eighth form of Goddess Durga is Maa Mahagauri. She rides a bull and is often seen wearing white clothes. This day is often associated with purple colour which symbolises serenity, beauty, and tranquillity.

Day 9 October 23, 2023: Peacock Green

Siddhidhatri is the ninth form of Goddess Durga who is worshipped on the last day of Shardiya Navratri. She is often seen mounted as a lion or resting on a lotus. The goddess is displayed wearing clothes in peacock green colour which symbolises love, peace, and kindness.
