In Uttar Pradesh, around 13% of houses were completed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana subsidy scheme in the last five years. The government told Rajya Sabha on Monday. According to the 2011 census, UP, which has the second-highest urban population in India, got the highest number of units completed under the scheme between 2019-20 and 2023-24 with 1.15 million (11,49,711) houses.
“Over 1.18 crore houses have been sanctioned by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) till November 18,” said Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu.
He continued, “The ministry has been supplementing the efforts of states and Union territories by providing central assistance under PMAY-U since June 25, 2015, to provide pucca houses in urban areas across the country. Based on project proposals submitted by the State/UT Governments under PMAY-U, as of 18.11.2024, a total of 118.64 lakh houses have been sanctioned by the Ministry..., and more than 88.02 lakh are completed/delivered to the beneficiaries.
"The remaining houses are at different stages of construction," the minister said in a written note.
According to the reports, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat are the next best-performing states but by a considerable margin, with 6,85,865, 6,80,691, and 6,63,609 completed units, respectively. As per 2011 Census, Maharashtra tops in urban population followed by other Indian states including Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat. Madhya Pradesh has reported over 0.5 million completed houses while Tamil Nadu stands with 0.36 million figure and West Bengal at 0.27 million units, according to the data tabled on Monday.

Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Tokhan Sahu stated that the total number of houses completed under PMAY-U is 11.864 million since its launch in 2015.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the green light for PMAY-U 2.0 in August, paving the way for the construction of an additional 10 million houses.
