Prime Minister Modi has placed the historic ‘Sengol’ near the Lok Sabha Speaker’s chair in the all the new Parliament building in the capital. The ‘Sengol’ essentially holds a great significance as a symbol of great power and authority and reminds us of its use in the South Indian kingdoms of the eras gone by.

The ‘Sengol’ which has been successfully installed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is essentially a historical sceptre from Tamil Nadu that was handed to India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

This landmark move was a symbol of handing over authority from the British imperial rulers to and has been preserved at a museum in Allahabad till now. With the establishment of the new Parliament building in New Delhi the sceptre ‘Sengol’ has been installed in its premises. The reason behind this installation is evident at both points in time, as mentioned by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

As per Union Minister Amit Shah, learning about the historical lineage of the ‘sengol’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the decision of giving it to the country on the day of the inauguration of the Parliament. This decision came as a step to incorporate the “‘Sengol’ in the event lineup that was made. ‘Sengol’ represents the similar feeling that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru felt on August 14, 1947,” the Union Home Minister mentioned.

The then Governor-General of India, C. Rajagopalachari was consulted in the matter by Jawaharlal Nehru and he recommended imitating the Tamil custom of presenting a sceptre style phantom to a new king as he ascended to the throne and power.
