It is Father’s Day on June 18, 2023, and everyone will be posting mushy quotes calling their father their superhero. My father is also my guardian angel from whom I have inherited his quirks that have left me irritated and shouting ‘arghhhhh’ as I grew up.
The funny thing is that as an adult I realised that I am so much like him. My father is a hoarder. He gets pumped by collecting a small block of wood, piece of cardboard, discarded foam, torn clothes, or nails that he thinks he might need in future to fix something in our house.
My sister and I used to get reprimanded as a child for throwing away boxes of appliances, toys, or anything that we used to buy. He would throw tantrums in front of my mother if he ever came to know that she donated his old clothes behind his back.
And guess what, as an adult, I realised that I am a hoarder too. I am not as pumped about collected cardboard and nails, but I get bumped about discarding clothes. Nobody believes me when I say that I have saved a denim skirt which my mother bought for me when I was in 5th or 6th standard. And every summer I wear it once or twice as a ritual and assert my claim, “I can still fit into its gripping waist so why should I give it away.”
We have all heard that we inherit several things from our parents but to think that we can also mirror their qualities is something that I wonder if even science can describe.
While collecting personal accounts for this story, I was analysing myself to check how much I am like my father, and the list went on and on. From not keeping automobile keys in place to keeping confidential stuff safely and forgetting about it, the day was a revelation for me.
Much like my father, I keep calling my mother to ask, “Maa, have you seen my papers that I told you I was keeping in my cupboard?” “Maa, I can’t find the car keys, but I remember that I brought them home yesterday when I came back from the office.”
Each time, she would shout at me that I have inherited all the ‘bad’ habits of my father.
I thought that I cannot be the only one who is like this. I connected with a few people who shared my thoughts about inheriting the quirky qualities of parents.
‘I Plan Ahead’
Tushita Sahni, Chief of Communication at P4C, shared that she has heard that the first daughter of the family is the carbon copy of her father. She agrees with this saying because she has inherited qualities from her father like planning ahead and keeping everything organised.
“Growing up, he always had a to-do list and a schedule for the day,” she added. It might have bothered her as a child, but as a grown-up, she loves to create routines and follow them religiously to achieve her goals.
‘I Reach Stations Early’
Gagan Anand, Founder of Scuzo Ice ‘O’ Magic, said, “My father, with his endearing quirk, always insisted on reaching stations half an hour early.” He added, “Little did I know that this very habit, which once made me go 'arghhh' as a kid, would become a part of my own routine as I grew up.”
It is a sweet reminder for him about the strong bond he shares with his father. He said, “This Father's Day, let's celebrate those quirks and acknowledge the little things that make our fathers so special."

‘I Am Sustainable’
While being sustainable is not a bad thing, Mugdha Pradhan, functional nutritionist, and Founder and CEO of iThrive, shared that it would drive her crazy when her father would keep a constant watch on tap water to ensure not a single drop goes to waste.
“When I was a kid, my dad was hyper-obsessed with the environment. He was always talking about saving water and recycling… He was quite focused on utilising the organic grocery to its fullest and saving electricity where no equipment in our house would run unnecessarily,” she added.
However, as an adult, she feels that this one habit has made her conscious of the environment and the need to utilise resources sustainably (Algae Is The Future Of Sustainable Clothing).
‘I Am A Calm Warrior Prince’
Ambar Srivastava, an IT professional in Bengaluru, said that he has inherited a strange way of handling situations from his father. While speaking about his father, he said, “He has mastered the art of remaining surprisingly calm during confrontations, but there is a catch: his blood pressure would skyrocket and he would get ready to erupt like a volcano.”
His father remains calm for as long as he can during heated arguments. When the water would rise overhead, only then he would react. “He keeps his cool face intact while hiding the ticking time bomb within,” he said.
He added, “My father is a calm warrior, and I see myself as a warrior prince.”
