Associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu is credited with co-creating this game and introducing it to the Times’ Games section. Available on both web and mobile, Connections challenges players to find sets of four words that share a common link.
Every Connections puzzle presents 16 words, which players must sort into four distinct categories. These groups can range from book titles and software to country names and more. While it might appear that certain words belong together in different ways, there is always just one correct solution.

How To Play NYT Connections?
To start, open the Connections game on the New York Times website or in their Games app (previously called the Crossword app). You will find a board with 16 tiles, each displaying a word or phrase. Your goal is to choose four tiles that share a common theme. Sometimes the connection is straightforward, for example, RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are all forms of precipitation. Other times, there’s a twist of wordplay, like BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH, which all pair with “list” (bucket list, guest list, etc.).
Pick four tiles and press the Submit button. If your selection is correct, the matching category and its colour will appear. If you are wrong, you will have another opportunity to guess.
