The New York Times Connections puzzle for Tuesday, July 29, 2025, may not have been the toughest one yet, but a few sneaky words could still trip up even the most experienced solvers. Whether you’re diving into it with your morning coffee or squeezing in a quick brain teaser during your commute to work, we’ve got just the guidance you need.
Below, you will find thoughtful hints to help you work out the categories, without giving too much away. And if you’re ready to see the complete solution, scroll down for a full breakdown of today’s Connections answers.
How to Play Connections
To get started, open the Connections game on the New York Times website or in the NYT Games app. You will see 16 tiles, each containing a single word or phrase.
Your objective is to group the tiles into four sets of four, where all four items in each set share a common theme. Sometimes the connection is obvious, like RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW all being types of precipitation. Other times, the link is more subtle or based on wordplay, for example, BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH can all precede the word “list.”
To make a guess, select four words you believe are connected and tap Submit.
If your guess is correct, the group will be colour-coded and its category revealed:
- Yellow is the easiest group
- Green is slightly harder
- Blue is challenging
- Purple is the most difficult
If your guess is incorrect, you’ll get another chance, but you’re only allowed three wrong attempts. A fourth incorrect guess will end the game, and all the correct groupings will be revealed.
You win by correctly sorting all four groups before running out of attempts.
