In response to South Korean activists scattering political leaflets, North Korea reportedly started deploying floating balloons filled with trash towards South Korea in May earlier this year. While there was no hazardous material found, the balloons contained cigarette butts, manure, waste paper, and scraps of cloth. This continued from May 29 and June 27, 2024, and created quite a kerfuffle in the rival nations. One balloon landing on a runway at Incheon Airport led to a three-hour suspension of takeoffs and landings at the country’s biggest international gateway.

“Airspace safety is gradually deteriorating. There are no official airspace warnings for South Korea, but the risk situation seems to be getting worse,” reportedly said OPSGROUP, a membership-based organisation that shares flight risk information.

Such trash balloons were also launched by North Korea back in 2016 as a retaliation for propaganda campaigns by North Korean defectors and activists in the South. According to reports, the idea was inspired by them sending items via balloons.

North Korea Resumes Flying Balloons Carrying Trash Towards South Korea

As per reports, North Korea has once again resumed flying trash balloons towards their Southern neighbours on Thursday. The South Korean government consequently warned its public to be cautious of stuff falling from above and asked its people to report spotting any balloons on the ground. In a statement, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff claimed that balloons flying north of Seoul, an hour’s drive from the border were spotted on Thursday afternoon, according to reports.
