NASA is on the lookout for aspiring astronauts for their upcoming Artemis Moon mission and future expeditions to Mars. The application window is open until April 2, 2024, as announced by the agency on 'X' (formerly Twitter).

NASA, the United States' space agency, is on the hunt for aspiring astronauts to join its upcoming Moon mission, Artemis, and future voyages to Mars. "Applications to become an astronaut are open until April 2, 2024," the agency announced on 'X' (formerly Twitter) this Tuesday.

The search for these space explorers is part of NASA's ambitious mission, involving the Orion spacecraft atop the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, which will transport humans on missions to the Moon and eventually to Mars.

So, What Does It Take To Become NASA Astronaut?

1) Eligible individuals are required to hold a master's degree in a STEM field, such as engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, or mathematics, from an accredited institution.
2) Candidates must also have at least three years of relevant professional experience gained after completing their degree. For pilot applicants, this includes a minimum of 1,000 Pilot-in-Command hours, with at least 850 hours in high-performance jet aircraft. Medical doctors seeking to apply are eligible to have their residency experience counted, provided it is completed by June 2025.4) In addition to a master's degree, candidates may also meet the educational requirement through two years of progress towards a related doctoral program or completion of a Doctor of Medicine or related medical degree, or participation in a nationally recognized test pilot school program, to be finished by June 2025.5) Leadership, teamwork, and communication skills are crucial for NASA's missions, which aim to propel humans into uncharted territories of space (Maximising Space: The Art Of Transforming Small Apartments Into Versatile Homes).

But How Are The Candidates Selected?

NASA's Astronaut Selection Board will meticulously review all applications. Those meeting the criteria will be invited for interviews at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. "Following these interviews, approximately half of the candidates are called back for a second round. From this group, NASA's new astronaut (5 Food Items That Astronauts Cannot Consume In Space) recruits are chosen," explained NASA. These successful candidates will then undergo two years of rigorous training, honing essential astronaut skills such as spacewalking, operating the space station, flying T-38 jet planes, and controlling a robotic arm.
