Mumbai's commuters are about to experience a revolutionary change in their daily travel as the city prepares to unveil its first underground metro line. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) is set to launch Phase I of the Metro 3 corridor, marking a significant milestone in the city's transportation history.

This phase will feature the city’s first underground metro line, stretching from Aarey to the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). With an investment of approximately ₹38,000 crore, this project aims to enhance long-distance travel for commuters in Mumbai.

Mumbai Metro Phase 3 Opening Date

The official inauguration of the 12-kilometre stretch is expected to take place in the first week of October 2024, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi slated to officiate the event. A senior MMRCL official confirmed, “The line will open to the public the day after the inauguration. We are fully prepared for the inaugural run.” Sources suggest that the inauguration will likely occur between October 3 and 5, with October 4 being the most probable date.

Phase 1 of Metro 3 will connect several key areas in Mumbai. The route includes ten stations, Aarey Colony, SEEPZ, MIDC, Marol Naka, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminal 2, Sahar Road, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminal 1, Santacruz, Vidyanagari, and BKC.

Once fully operational, the complete Metro 3 corridor will span approximately 33 kilometres and connect Mumbai's southern, central, and western regions. MMRCL anticipates that both phases of the project will serve around 1.7 million commuters daily. Trains are expected to run every three to four minutes, accommodating at least 2,500 passengers per train.

While specific fare details have yet to be finalised, Metro services typically employ an open-loop automated fare collection system. Passengers can expect to pay using contactless pre-paid and post-paid smart cards issued by partnering banks. Only RuPay debit and credit cards will be accepted for fare payments.
