Our mothers mean everything to us and even Bollywood knows that! No wonder directors have, for years portrayed a number of films where a pivotal character of a mother would make all the difference. From the scheming to the doting, Indian cinema has seen a number of actors playing mothers on celluloid. Mothers have always played an important role in setting the tone of a film, helping move the plot further, and at times, being the centre around with the plot of a film revolves and evolves.
On the occasion of Mother's Day, as the world celebrates motherhood and its many layers, we take a look at some of the most iconic mothers of Indian cinema.
Nargis
Nargis, who epitomized the role of a suffering mum in the 1957 epic ‘Mother India’ where she essayed the role of a woman trying to single-handedly raising two sons while trying to save her land from the hands of an unscrupulous money-lender.
Rakhee
The actress who both co-starred with and enacted the role of Amitabh Bachchan's mother in several films, portrayed the role of a bereaved mother, often at the mercy of villains in films like Baazigar (1993), Khalnayak (1993), Karan Arjun (1995) among others.
Nirupa Roy
Nirupa Roy is the actor who epitomized Bollywood mothers. She effortlessly played a mother to Amitabh Bachchan and Sashi Kapoor in a number of movies. A suffering mother during the Angry Young Man movement in the Indian cinema, Nirupa Roy is known for her portrayal in several movies.
Jaya Bachchan
Having returned to cinema with Govind Nihalani's ‘Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa’ (1998), Jaya Bachchan received a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her work in the 2000 film ‘Fiza’. She also starred in Karan Johar's family drama ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ (2001) and ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ (2003).
Farida Jalal
Known for her comic timings, she has essayed the role of mother in films like ‘Raja Hindustani’, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’, ‘Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai’, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...’ and ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’.
Reema Lagoo
Madhuri Dixit's mother from ‘Hum Apke Hai Kaun’, actress Reema Lagoo is also known for her performances as Juhi Chawla's mother in ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ (1988) and Salman Khan's mother in 1989 hit ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’.

Lalita Pawar
This actor became famous for playing the wicked, scheming mother or the foul mother-in-law. She did notable films like ‘Sau Din Saas Ke’, ‘Hum Dono’, ‘Daag’ among many others.
