Even in the 21st century, sex education is taboo in India. Many people believe that sex education will create a “western influence” on society, and “corrupt our Indian culture”.

The lack of proper sex education is a bigger problem than it seems to be. Sex is an essential part of our lives and the lack of knowledge about it can be dangerous. In India, our peers and the internet is the only medium of sex education, and it can lead to severe misinformation.

Due to this, a lot of misconceptions can be created. We asked five women about the absurd misconceptions they had about sex in their younger years, and this is what they shared with us:

Condoms

“I have been quite open about the topic of sex which means I was familiar with the concept of safe sex and condoms. However, I thought that condoms work every time but I got to know the truth (that sometimes you can get pregnant even with a condom on) after watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S.”

- Amulya Khurana, 23 years old

Oral Sex

“I was familiar with the concept of oral sex but I wasn’t educated enough to know that oral sex doesn’t lead to pregnancy. However, as I grew older, I got to know from my friends that oral sex doesn’t lead to pregnancy.”

- Navya Kharbanda, 23 years old

Naked = Sex

“When I was not familiar with the whole concept of sex, I used to think that sex means you have to lie in the bed together and that is it. However, I learnt what sex really is through my friends and the internet.”

Is My Vagina Too Small For Sex

“When I first saw my boyfriend's penis, I thought it was too large to fit in my vagina. This scared me, and made me not want to have sex ever, so I kept dodging the topic. However, when I did have sex, I realised that I was missing out on a lot (pun intended).”

- Lavanya Singh, 26 years old

Sex Is A Western Concept

“I thought sex is a western concept and it doesn’t exist in India. According to 11-year-old me, babies in India were conceived automatically after getting married without having sex. I thought India is too cultured or ‘sanskari’ for sex. Later, I was shocked to know the truth from my friend.”

- Naina Malhotra, 30 years old
