A Day In The Life Of Krishna Singh, A Trans Man Struggling To Get His Gender-Affirming Surgery Done

Krishna Singh was once rejected after an interview because his identity card stated an identity that he didn't resonate with. It was just the beginning, Singh continues to struggle because of his identity and this is his story.

Growing up, Krishna Singh struggled with his identity. Born as a girl, Krishna always considered himself a boy. He felt different, for the longest time, he couldn't understand what was wrong with him. His group of friends would call him childish, family would expect him to act the gender he was born with. Feeling suffocated for years, Singh finally left his home at the age of 18.

He made it clear at the very beginning of our chat, he wanted his identity for his soul even if it's for a day. I could see the sadness in his eyes as he shared how he is struggling each day to get gender affirmation.

The Struggle To Get An Identity Card

"It is only over time that an individual understands their identity, however, by then, they already have an Aadhar Card. Many of us from the trans community have no identity card at all because of our families, they often burn or take away all the documents once they see us fighting for our identity. Getting a new identity card is a challenge," shared Krishna Singh who struggled for years to get himself an Aadhar Card, a 12-digit unique identity number that can be obtained by Indian citizens.

Krishna feels that the process to get an identity card should be more inclusive and the government should make amendments for the trans community to make it easier for them to get one.

In Hope For Gender Affirmation

Gender-affirming surgery gives a transgender person their identity. With the transition, the person can align their body with their gender. Ahead of the surgery, the individual undergoes hormone therapy and for transgender men, the journey is even more challenging due to the multiple procedures involved. Furthermore, each surgery comes with its own risks, however, Krishna Singh is ready to take any that comes his way because he feels only the transition will give him the solace he is looking for years now.

During our conversation he shared that a lot of his friends have warned him of the consequences of undergoing a sex transition, however, it doesn't bother him a bit. He said, "Even if I die a day after getting the surgery done, I will be happy, at least, I will lose life in a body that I always wanted to be in."
