History Of Dahi Handi (Why Do We Celebrate Dahi Handi?)

history of dahi handi

Dahi (curd) and Makkhan (butter) are believed to be among the favourites of Lord Krishna. According to many mythological stories, when Krishna was a little boy, he used to steal curd and butter from houses in his neighbourhood.

One of the villagers caught Krishna and his friends stealing butter or curd from her house. She took the little boy to Mother Yashoda and complained about his mischievous activities.

Yashoda suggested hanging the earthen pots from the ceiling so that kids could not reach them. Notorious Kanha came up with the idea of building a human pyramid to reach earthen pots. They used to visit empty houses with his friends, they used to huddle, and Krishna would be on the top trying to steal his favourite food items.

It earned little Krishna the title of Makkhan chor (butter thief).

Another famous legend says that when little Krishna was growing up, children in Vrindavan village were prohibited from eating nourished food items like milk products. Kansa, Krishna’s uncle, used to seize all milk-based products. Hence, Lord Krishna used to steal curd and butter along with his friends.

Started by Lord Krishna, Dahi Handi is a festival for which various communities come together to celebrate. People forget about their mutual differences and team up for a common goal of breaking the earthen pot hanging several feet above the ground.

It brings joy to young kids who participate and elders witnessing the event. It also symbolises cooperation and teamwork. Many people believe that it is celebrated as a reminder that the mischievous activities of young kids bring joy to an entire community.

Along with Dahi Handi, communities across cities organise cultural programmes, including dancing, poetry, fun games, etc. Learned people join these celebrations to convey the teachings of Lord Krishna on righteousness, unity, and love.
