From Mr & Mrs Iyer To Ajeeb Dastaans: Konkona Sen Sharma & Her Choice Of Unconventional Roles

Over the years, actor Konkona Sen Sharma has drawn her niche in the film industry. She has always brought characters to the screen like she owns them. Characters that are real, flawed, relatable, non-glamorous, and in all ways unconventional unlike most other women roles in Bollywood films.

Her characters were a representation of how women are not supposed to be ‘perfect’ and if otherwise, they do not end up being villains or antagonists. Characters like ‘Aisha’ from Wake Up Sid, or ‘Shireen’ from Lipstick Under My Burkha, or ‘Bharti’ from Ajeeb Dastaans make us feel like we are not the only ones who went through the same struggles or felt the same at some point in life.

Aisha gave us the courage to take that leap of faith and follow our dreams and careers even if it takes us moving to a new city, and out of our comfort zones. In the 2009 coming-of-age drama Wake Up Sid, Aisha Banerjee is an aspiring writer from Kolkata to moves to the city of dreams Mumbai to follow her career. Aisha gives us the sense of freedom and liberation that comes with taking your own decisions and making your own choices- right or wrong, good or bad.

While Bharti Mondal in Geeli Pucchi segment of the Netflix anthology Ajeeb Dastaans fights multiple battles every day including gender discrimination in a male-dominated workplace, caste discrimination, and being queer. After being dominated and dictated her whole life, towards the end of the film, Bharti makes a choice which is a reaction of how she has been treated her entire life and that makes a difference.
