Here’s How To Clean Your Sterling Jewellery Using Common Household Items

Jewellery possesses the power of garnering eyeballs of people from distance. The shine, the charm can bewitch anyone. However, the shine doesn’t always last long. Over the years the original sparkle tends to fade away. It happens because of the deposition of a layer of dirt or sometimes due to environmental factors. But, the bottom line is no one wants their jewellery pieces looking dull and unattractive. It is not necessary to run to your goldsmith to get this job done, in fact, you can clean your ornaments yourself using basic household items. So, let’s get started with cleaning your sterling jewellery pieces.  

Ketchup

Supplies 

• Bowl 
• Toothbrush 
• 4 tablespoon tomato ketchup 

Steps 

• Pour tomato ketchup in the bowl. 
• Submerge the pieces in the bowl of ketchup. Leave it alone to let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Do not leave jewellery in there for more than 5-10 minutes to avoid damage. 
• Take the pieces out and scrub them using a toothbrush. Lastly, rinse it off with warm water.

Baking Soda 

• 2-3 cups of hot water 
• Bowl 
• Baking Soda 
• Cotton towel 

Steps 

• Take a bowl, fill it with 2 cups of hot water. 
• Add 1 ½ tablespoon of baking soda. 
• Submerge your jewellery in the solution for 5-10 minutes. 
• Rinse the pieces in cool water to remove the residues. 
• Pat dry the pieces with a clean towel.

Vinegar 

Supplies 

• 2 cups of white vinegar 
• One large bowl 

Steps 

• Take a bowl, pour white vinegar in it. 
• Submerge your jewellery in white vinegar.
• Let it sit for 2-3 hours. Keep for longer hours if your jewellery is very dirty and has 
• Now, rinse and pat dry the pieces. 

Antacid 

Supplies 

• Antacid tablets
• Warm water
• Toothbrush 
• Aluminium foil 
• Large bowl 

Steps 

• Take a large bowl. Pour warm water in it. 
• Now, drop two antacid tablets. Mix well, let the tablets dissolve completely. 
• Drop your jewellery pieces into the solution one by one. Make sure they are not tangled together. 
• Let the pieces sit in the solution for about 2-3 minutes. 
• Scrub using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Gently but nicely remove dirt. 
• Also, use aluminium foil to clean the silver jewellery especially. 
• Take normal water in another bowl rinse jewellery pieces well.

Toothpaste 

Do not clean pearl jewellery using toothpaste. This must only be used to clean pieces of silver, gold or gemstone jewels.

• Cotton towel 
• Warm water

• Take out 2 tablespoon toothpaste in a small plate. 
• Take your toothbrush, dip in the paste and scrub away each dull piece one by one. 
• Now, dip a clean cloth in warm water and nicely wipe away the paste.
