2 Earthquakes Hit Kashmir’s Baramulla
On Monday, August 20, 2024, the Baramulla district of the Kashmir Valley was hit with two consecutive earthquakes. As per reports from the local authorities, there have been no reports of loss of life or damage to property from anywhere in the valley. As reported by Mukhtar Ahmad, the Meteorological Department Director, “The first earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale occurred at 6:45 a.m. with coordinates, latitude 34.17 degrees north and longitude 74.16 degrees east. The epicentre of the earthquake was in Baramulla district of J&K and its depth was 5 km inside the earth.” (SOURCE: NDTV)
The first earthquake caused chaos among the locals, and soon “the second earthquake occurred at 6:52 a.m. and its magnitude was 4.8 on the Richter scale. Its latitude was 34.20 degrees north and longitude 74.31 degrees east. The epicentre of the second earthquake was also in Baramulla district and it occurred at a depth of 10 km.” (SOURCE: NDTV)

The Drop, Cover, Hold On Method
Whether you live in an earthquake-prone area or not, you must be aware of the ‘drop, cover, hold on’ method. This method is a guide to how you should act during an earthquake. When an earthquake hits, you should:
- Drop to the floor immediately to prevent being knocked down, and crawl to a protected space.
- Cover your head, neck, and arms with a sturdy table or desk nearby, or crawl underneath it for protection. You must stay on your knees and bend over to prevent injuries.
- Hold on to sturdy objects till the shaking stops.

Get Earthquake Insurance
Getting your building’s structural layout evaluated is imperative, especially if you live in an earthquake prone area. Contact your insurance provider to get earthquake insurance as a preventative measure.
Secure Loose Items In Your Space
If you have loose items such as straps, hooks, or latches, secure them so they don't injure you during an earthquake.
