Why Bharat Bandh On August 21?
The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has announced a nationwide Bharat Bandh on August 21, 2024, to protest against the Supreme Court’s ruling that called for quota-within-quota. The court has allowed states to create sub-categories within the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. The Bharat Bandh is announced to protest against the court’s decision and demand the order reversal. This revolutionary decision by the Supreme Court has sparked controversies and widespread debates. This shutdown is expected to get the support from political and social organisations.
What Will Be Open?
Despite the nationwide shutdown, here are the services that will remain open:
- Emergency, ambulance services, hospitals, pharmacies and medical services will remain open.
- The police services will remain active.
- Government offices, banks, schools and colleges will remain open as usual.

Safety Measures
To ensure safety measures, senior civil and police officials held a meeting to assess the preparation for the bandh to avoid violence. All divisional commissioners, district magistrates and senior police officers attended the meeting through video conferencing and were directed to be prepared for the bandh. The Western Uttar Pradesh police are on high alert because of the sensitivity of the area. The public transport and private offices usually remain non-functional.
