Will women ever be safe? There is no brake on the crimes against women and the murder case of journalist Soumya Vishwanathan is just an example of the grave situation. Returning home from work, the television journalist Soumya Vishwanathan was shot dead by a group of youngsters on September 30, 2008. The verdict was scheduled to be put up for judgment on October 18, 2023, by Additional Sessions Judge Ravindra Kumar Pandey and the accused are to be present on the hearing date in front of the court.

The court noted the arguments by the defence and the prosecution to be complete on October 6 and the judge has allowed the parties to file written submissions, if any, by October 14 considering that one of the accused, Ajay Sethi, wanted to make a written submission regarding additional arguments.

Five people, Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Baljeet Malik, Ajay Kumar and Ajay Sethi, were arrested on the murder charge and have been in custody since March 2009. The journo was murdered at night while she was on her way back home from work in her car around 3.30 a.m.

The Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) was invoked against the accused. The motive, as claimed by the police, was robbery. Three of the convicts, Malik, Kapoor, and Shukla were also found guilty in the 2009 killing of IT executive Jigisha Ghosh.

Who Was Soumya Vishwanathan?

The 25-year-old deceased, Soumya Vishwanathan, was a journalist with India Today. Her dead body was recovered from her car on Nelson Mandela Marg in South Delhi on September 30, 2008.

Connection Between Soumya And Jigisha's Murder Cases

The case took a turn towards justice in 2009 after the retrieval of Jigisha's murder weapon. The case developed further when one of the common accused from both cases confessed his involvement in Soumya's murder during the hearing of Jigisha's murder case.
