Instagram New Update

Instagram has announced a major update that allows users to upload Reels up to three minutes long, effectively doubling the previous limit of 90 seconds. This change, confirmed by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, aims to provide creators with more flexibility in storytelling and content creation.

Instagram Reels Now Allow Three-Minute Videos

Previously, Instagram Reels were limited to just 90 seconds, a format that emphasised short-form, quick videos. However, as per Mosseri, Instagram has increased the limit to three minutes after receiving feedback from creators. He explained, “Starting today, you can upload Reels to Instagram that are up to three minutes long. Historically, it’s been only 90 seconds, and that’s because we wanted to focus Instagram on short-form videos and not long-form. But we have heard a lot of feedback from creators saying that 90 seconds is just too short. We hope that increasing the limit to three minutes will help you tell the stories you really want to share.”

This update brings Instagram in line with other video platforms like YouTube Shorts, which had already increased its video length to three minutes.

  • This extended format opens up new possibilities for content creators, including:
  • In-depth tutorials and how-to guides
  • Extended musical performances and live sets
  • Longer vlogs and travel diaries
  • Creative storytelling with more complex narratives

Instagram Profile Grids Getting a New Look

In addition to the new Reels duration, Instagram will also implement changes to user profiles. The platform will transition from its iconic square profile grids to rectangular ones. Mosseri explained that this shift is necessary because most content uploaded is in a vertical format, which square grids often crop excessively. He noted, “I think users will come to that over time, and their videos will be displayed as intended in their profiles, rather than being excessively cropped.”

Another significant update involves how users interact with Reels. Instagram will now display liked Reels to friends, enhancing social engagement on the platform.
