In a tragic incident at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), the collapse of a roof at Terminal 1 resulted in one fatality and left six others injured, severely disrupting flight operations. The incident, which occurred on June 28, 2024 morning, has sparked concerns over safety protocols and infrastructure management at one of India's busiest airports.

According to the latest media report, Delhi Fire Services received a call about a roof collapse at around 5:30 am on June 28, 2024, from the Delhi airport. In addition to the roof sheet, the support beams also collapsed, causing damage to cars parked in the pick-up and drop areas of the terminal.

Emergency services promptly responded to the scene, initiating rescue operations and providing medical assistance to the injured. All the injured were taken to the hospital.
Delhi Airport Roof Collapse Injuries And Casualties
Tragically, one individual lost their life in the incident, while six others sustained injuries. The injured were rushed to hospitals for treatment, where they are currently undergoing medical care.

DCP (IGI) Usha Rangnani stated, “At around 5 a.m., due to heavy rains, the shed outside Terminal 1 of IGI, spanning from departure gate no. 1 to gate no. 2, collapsed, in which around 4 vehicles were damaged and around six persons have been injured and one person has died. Legal action is also being taken.”

Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu conducted an inspection of Terminal 1 at the airport and announced the temporary relocation of operations to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. He also announced compensation of ₹20 lakh to the victim's family and ₹3 lakh each to the injured.

The collapse has severely impacted flight operations at Terminal 1, leading to widespread disruptions and cancellations. Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu visited the Delhi airport after the incident and inspected Terminal 1 with his team. He said that the airport will temporarily shift operations to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. Delhi Airport shared on its Twitter handle that, “All departing and arriving flights from Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 are fully operational. Flights at Terminal 1 Arrivals are also operating. However, the departing flights from Terminal 1 are cancelled till 2 pm today. “
