After 16 long years, the Indian women’s hockey team won a bronze medal. The team performed spectacularly as they beat New Zealand by 2-1 in a shootout, and won the medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
In regulation time, Salima Tete (29′) scored the opening goal for India, only for Olivia Merry (60′) to score a late goal for New Zealand and push the match to a Shoot-Out.

Skipper Savita Punia showed exceptional performance as she made three sensational saves in the shoot-out. On the other hand, Sonika and Navneet Kaur got India the win as they struck past Kiwi goalkeeper Grace O’Hanlon.
As the game started, the team started cautiously by holding the ball in the midfield. The game was an interesting one and kept viewers at the edge of their seats. At one moment, Salima Tete almost put her team in the lead after India forced their way into the Kiwi circle through the central channel. But her shot went wide and the first quarter ended with both teams at 0-0.

In the second quarter, India got a point. The team entered halftime with this goal. Soon enough, New Zealand also scored a goal. Both the teams were at par and India needed another goal to win the game.
At last, the match reached a shoot-out and India took a lead of 2-1. With Katie Doar and Olivia Shannon missing for the Kiwis, India went on to win the match and claimed the hockey bronze medal.
