If you are willing to utilise the fruit to its every bit, use its seeds to grow a papaya plant at home using these easy steps.
How To Grow Papaya From Seeds?
Seed Preparation
- Collect the seeds: The centre of a papaya fruit is loaded with seeds. Scoop them out and obtain the seeds in a bowl.
- Clean the seeds: Papaya seeds are covered with juicy and sticky pulp which needs to be washed off before planting. Rub the seeds against a mesh strainer and soak them in water for about two days. Once done, clean them thoroughly and leave them to dry on a tissue for a few days.
Planting Papaya Seeds
- Take pots or a seed tray and fill it up with a well-draining, pre-moistened seed starting mix or soil.
- Sow the seeds about ¼ inch deep in the soil. Plant 2-3 seeds per pot as papayas have a low probability of germination.
- Place your pots in a spot with immense indirect sunlight. Constantly moisten the soil but do not make it soggy.
- Papayas take time to grow, hence the seeds could take as long as 2-3 weeks to germinate.
After Gemination
- After your seeds have germinated into tiny seedlings with a few leaves, thin them keeping only their strong parts.
- After your plant has grown about 6 inches tall, transfer them into larger pots or your garden, if you have enough space and a snow-free climate.
Caring For Papaya
- Papaya trees need full sun, however, keep them under indirect light if it's too hot.
- Water regularly to keep the soil moist. However, let it dry a little in between watering.
- Add fertiliser to your tree once a month to ensure it is thriving.
- Papaya trees grow best during summer and repel colder climates. If you live in a cold place, grow them indoors.
