• Prepare the Bottle: Start by selecting a large plastic bottle. Cut the top off to create a wide opening, making sure it’s big enough for the plant to grow comfortably. Wash the bottle thoroughly before use.
• Create Drainage: Swaminathan emphasises the importance of drainage to prevent waterlogging. Poke small holes at the bottom of the bottle to allow excess water to escape. Add small stones or gravel to the bottom to further enhance drainage.
• Prepare the Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix that combines potting soil with perlite or sand. This will help avoid root rot and ensure the plant gets adequate aeration. Fill the bottle about two-thirds full with this soil mixture.
• Plant the Seed or Sapling: You can either plant clove seeds or use a small sapling. If you're using seeds, Swaminathan suggests soaking them in warm water for a few hours before planting to help with germination. Place the seed or sapling into the soil and gently cover it with more soil. Ensure the plant is stable and properly seated.
