Recently, an update went viral about OYOno longerallowing unmarried couples tocheck-into its hotels, with Meerut being the first city to implement this. But is this the truth? Well, partially. As per the revised guidelines, unmarried couples may not be allowed in OYO hotels only if the hotel owners/managers deem so. In other words, the platform has no role in this. It is rather upon the partner hotels and "their judgement" to permit such couples into their property. The guidelines add every couple has to produce valid proof to substantiate their relationship status.
Has OYO Barred Unmarried Couples From Its Hotels?
In a statement, the company quoted by PTI, said, "OYO has empowered its partner hotels’ discretion to decline couple bookings based in their judgment, aligning with local social sensibility."
Reports suggest the multinational hospitality chain took the call after getting feedback from local civil society groups and has also apparently received similar recommendations from other cities.
Speaking with PTI, Pawan Sharma, region head of OYO North India, said, "OYO is committed to upholding safe and responsible hospitality practices. While we respect individual freedoms and personal liberty, we also recognise our responsibility to listen to and work with the law enforcement and civil society groups in the micro markets we operate in. We will continue to review this policy and its impact periodically."

In this light, the firm has also initiated steps such as meeting police and other partner hotels for joint seminars on safe hospitality, blacklisting those properties found to be indulging in immoral activities, and taking action against hotels using OYO branding illegally.
Now, the main reason these revised guidelines are hitting headlines is because, previously, OYO didn't have a stringent policy like this in place, where the partner hotels could deny unmarried couplesfrom checking-in. This is one of the many reasons the chain was a popular choice for such couples.
But now that the management of the partner hotels has the control to decide, it needs to be seen whether OYO is able to retain its image in the market. While Meerut in Uttar Pradesh is the first city where the guidelines will be enforced, they might soon be implemented in other places based on feedback. So, to sum it up, there's no blanket ban on unmarried couples by OYO; it's a policy change authorising hotels to take the final call.
