Gudi Padwa is an important Maharashtrian festival which is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month. This day signifies the commencement of the Marathi New Year and thus holds extreme importance for the Hindus. On this day, Marathi community people celebrate by erecting a Gudi outside their homes and conducting associated rituals. The literal meaning of the term ‘Gudi’ means a flag or banner, while ‘Padwa’ means the first day of the month. The day symbolises the harvest of the Rabi crop and is believed to be the day when Lord Brahma started the creation of the universe. In Maharashtra, Gudi Padwa (gudi padwa playlist) holds utmost significance in celebrating the victories of the Maratha ruler, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It is also believed that Gudi Padwa marks the beginning of Satyuga, an era of truth and righteousness.

Gudi Padwa Celebrations

On this day, women decorate their homes with vibrant Gudis after bathing which symbolises victory and auspicious beginnings. A Gudi is crafted using a bamboo stick topped with an inverted silver, copper or brass vessel. Also, people decorate their house entrance with neem, mango leaves and flowers. Rangolis are also made to decorate the houses. People prepare special dishes like Puran Poli, modak and Shrikhand. Some people visit temples to seek blessings.
