Severe Air Quality Leads To Imposition Of GRAP-IV In Delhi; Here's All You Need To Know

Recently, Delhi’s air quality had turned worse when it touched a record level high with air quality in the severe zone. As the situation takes a dip further, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has declared the invocation of Stage IV of the GRAP in the entire NCR, along with the implementation of rules and regulations under stages I, II, AND III.

CAQM’s Statement

CAQM stated on Sunday, “Keeping in view the prevailing trend of air quality, and in an effort to prevent further deterioration of air quality in the region, the Sub-Committee today has taken the call to invoke all actions as envisaged under Stage IV of GRAP 'Severe Air Quality (Delhi's AQI 450), today with immediate effect in the entire NCR.”

What Is GRAP-4?

Under the enforcement of GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) -IV, heavy vehicles and Diesel-powered medium goods vehicles will remain banned from the streets of Delhi, along with the prohibition of construction activities like construction of road infrastructure.

There are four stages of GRAP. Group 1 is implemented between AQI 201 and 301. Group 2 comes into action when AQI falls between 301 and 400. Group 3 is for when AQI is between 401 and 450. Grape 4 is operative for when AQI is between 450 and 500 which essentially means that the situation is out of control.

According to the experts, the AQI may remain in the severe category for the next few days considering that the period of November 1-15 has been the worst in terms of air quality for Delhi in the last few years.
