Whoopi Goldberg, the American actor, comedian, author and popular television personality, is the latest amongst the celebrity walkout from Twitter following Elon Musk's takeover. Other celebrities who have recently claimed to have quit the platform include model Gigi Hadid, television host and producer Shonda Rhimes, This Is Us executive producer Ken Olin, and singers Toni Braxton and Sara Bareilles.

“The place is a mess,” said the View co-host while making the announcement on her ABC show on November 7, 2022.

“It’s been a little over a week since Elon Musk took over Twitter and this place is a mess. I’m getting off today because I just feel like it’s so messy, and I’m tired of now having certain kinds of attitudes blocked now getting back on. So I’m going to get out, and if it settles down enough and I feel more comfortable maybe I’ll come back. But as of tonight, I’m done with Twitter.”

Goldberg further added, “People keep saying it’s free speech, but all speech is not free speech. Some speech is not OK free speech. So everybody has to agree on that, but if people keep saying ‘You hurt my free speech’ it’s going to be a problem. You know what? This is our problem. But it ain’t my problem today because I’m out.”

While Grey’s Anatomy creator and producer Rhimes said, “Not hanging around for whatever Elon has planned. Bye,” and Olin tweeted, “I’m out of here.”

“Let’s keep the faith. Let’s protect our democracy. Let’s try to be kinder. Let’s try to save the planet. Let’s try to be more generous. Let’s look to find peace in the world,” he added.

“I’m shocked and appalled at some of the ‘free speech’ I’ve seen on this platform since its acquisition. Hate speech under the veil of ‘free speech’ is unacceptable. I am choosing to stay off Twitter as it is no longer a safe space for myself, my sons and other [people of color],” wrote R&B artist Braxton.

This came in light after Musk’s controversial declaration of Twitter charging $8 per month for the blue tick verification on the platform.

A day earlier, Musk took to Twitter and wrote, “Twitter needs to become by far the most accurate source of information about the world. That’s our mission.”

To which, Digital Media Manager for the New Castle County Government, Kyle Grantham replied, “And to do this, I’ll let anyone to gives me money appear to be a legitimate source of news, rather than just ensuring all legitimate sources of news are confirmed to be who they say they are”

“You represent the problem: journalists who think they are the only source of legitimate information. That’s the big lie,” wrote Musk.

Earlier this week, comedian Kathy Griffin’s account was suspended by Twitter for impersonating Musk. “Going forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying “parody” will be permanently suspended,” wrote Musk.

He further added, “Previously, we issued a warning before suspension, but now that we are rolling out widespread verification, there will be no warning.

This will be clearly identified as a condition for signing up to Twitter Blue. Any name change at all will cause temporary loss of verified checkmark.”
