The festival marks the harvest season in Punjab. It falls a day before Makar Sankranti, which is another Hindu festival and is considered the most auspicious day of the year.

Also, Lohri marks the end of the winter season and the beginning of longer days. So, the festival welcomes the sun deity or Lord Sun. The festival is celebrated to thank Lord Sun and mother earth for a good harvest.

The first Lohri of a newlywed couple is celebrated on a grand scale with all family members, relatives, and friends in attendance. It is on the occasion of Lohri that the newly wed bride is introduced to all the members of the family and they give her a warm and friendly welcome with dancing and singing. Also, the first Lohri is considered very auspicious for the new bride because it symbolises fertility.

On the occasion of first Lohri, the newlywed bride wears new, bright clothes, wears bangles, applies henna or mehendi. The groom too wears new attire, usually matching with the bride. In Sikh tradition, the groom wears a new turban.

The bride receives a lot of gifts from the family including clothes, sweets, jewellery, makeup among others.

First Lohri Rituals For Newly Wed Couple

On the occasion of their first Lohri, the newly wed couple is the first one to throw sesame seeds, jaggery, rewari, popcorn, and sugarcane in the bornfire. The couple once again takes 7 pheras around the bonfire. The newly wed couple then takes the blessings of all the elders present at the event.

How To Prepare For First Lohri?

If you are a newly wed bride and prepping for your first Lohri then here are some quick tips you should follow -

• Begin with choosing the right outfit for the occasion of Lohri. You can opt for a traditional outfit like a Patiala salwar kameez, sharara set, silk saree, or lehenga. To add an ethnic touch to your outfit, you can team your outfit with a phulkari dupatta or shawl.
• Next, according to your outfit, choose the right hairstyle for Lohri. Accessorise your hairstyle with traditional parandi or go for a classic bun. You can also accessorise your look with a maangtika for that Punjabi look.

• Choosing the right jewellery is also important. On the occasion of Lohri, you can go big with your jewellery. Pair your look with a polki or kundan choker, heavy chaandbalis, and bangles.
• Your makeup too needs to be on point. Go for heavy eyes and a nude lip if that's your calling. You can also go loud with your makeup for Lohri because usually, it is a night event. Accentuate your look with sindoor.
• Finish off by choosing the right footwear to go with your outfit. You can pick traditional juttis or kolhapuris depending on your outfit for the event.
