Have you ever seen a father celebrating his daughter’s divorce? It is an unheard event, but Prem Gupta from Ranchi, Jharkhand, has set a new example for all parents. In a country where divorce is a taboo subject and a lot of stigma is attached to it, Mr Gupta has shown how to support your kid unconditionally.
Why Prem Gupta Celebrated His Daughter’s Divorce?
On October 15, 2023, when many Indians were celebrating the first day of Shardiya Navratri, Mr Gupta reached the house of his daughter’s in-laws with fireworks and bands. It was a sight to behold to see a father dancing with joy to bring his daughter, Sakshi, home.
According to social media, Mr Gupta shared a video of the celebration on his social media account. In April 2022, Mr Gupta married off his daughter to an assistant engineer Sachin Kumar. He used to work at Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited. Mr Gupta came to know that Sakshi’s husband and in-laws used to torture her. According to reports, Kumar used to throw her out of the house too.
After a couple of days of marriage, Sakshi came to know that Sachin had married twice before. She shared the incident with her father. The two families tried to make things work, but ultimately, Sakshi filed for divorce.

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr Gupta said that Kumar and his family will pay ₹17 lakh as alimony. It is the amount equivalent to what Mr Gupta spent for the wedding. He has recently recovered from cancer six months ago.
He has said that they have not yet decided on what the future holds for Sakshi, however, he wishes that his daughter move on and start a new life. The family court in Ranchi will announce the couple’s divorce (Be Cognizant Of Things Before Filing Divorce) soon.
Why Celebrating Divorce Is Unique?
In a country like India where we are still contesting on the right age to marry, and girls in rural and interior parts are often given away as child brides, Mr Gupta celebrating his daughter’s divorce is not only unique but also praise-worthy.
Many of us have grown up hearing ‘paraya dhan’, which translates to that a girl belongs to someone else, her husband and in-laws, and her parents are just gatekeepers until she is married. We have also heard in Hindi films and TV serials that a woman’s doli picks up from her father’s house, and she leaves her husband’s house only after her death.
