According to the National Centre of Seismology, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit Tibet at 6:35 a.m. today near the Nepal border. The tremors of this high-magnitude earthquake were felt in Nepal and several parts of India, including Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal. The first earthquake of 2025 with a magnitude of 7.1 hit Tibet early on Tuesday, January 7 around 6:35 am. The tremors of this massive earthquake were felt in Kathmandu and northern parts of India, including Bihar and West Bengal. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Tingri, a rural Chinese province known as the getaway to the Everest region, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake was recorded at 6:35 am. After the first hit, the region shortly felt two more earthquakes. The second earthquake hit at 7:02 with magnitude 4.7 at a depth of 10 km and the third earthquake was of magnitude 4.9 at 7:07 am at 20 km depth. While the tremors were felt in Bihar and West Bengal, the destruction of life or property is not reported yet.

According to the Chinese State-owned news agency Xinhua, "Fifty-three people have been confirmed dead, and 62 others injured as of Tuesday noon after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake jolted Dingri County in the city of Xigaze in Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region at 9:05 am Tuesday."
Nepal is nestled in a geographically active region, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, forming the Himalayas. This geographic location makes it more prone to earthquakes. In 2015, an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude hit Nepal killing nearly 9000 people and more than 22,000 were injured.
