Diwali is just around the corner. The festival of lights is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. Almost all our Diwali rituals revolve around pleasing Maa Lakshmi, and seeking her blessings for wealth, prosperity, and joy.

The entire lighting up of our homes with diyas, making beautiful rangolis, and cleaning our spaces is done to welcome Goddess Lakshmi to our homes on this day.

The Puja ritual done on Diwali holds the utmost importance. Astrologically, if done right, Diwali puja can bring wealth into our homes. However, a lot of us make some common mistakes while performing the puja at home.

We spoke to Astro Vibhuti Narayan Tiwari from Shri Narayan Jyotish Kendra and asked him to share mistakes we should avoid while performing Diwali puja at home.

Place Goddess Lakshmi And Lord Ganesha’s Idols In The Right Direction

A lot of people don't pay attention to the placement of the Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha's idol during Diwali puja. However, astrologically, it can have a negative impact. Our astro expert shared that for Diwali puja, the idols should be placed in the 'Ishaan Kon' or northeast corner of the home. It is believed that Gods reside in this angle of the house.

Use A Wooden Stool To Place The Idols

Many place Goddess Lakshmi's idol on fancy trays and boxes. Avoid doing that and place the idols on a wooden stool. Place a red or green coloured cloth on it. Before you begin the puja, take some 'gangajal' or holy water and sprinkle it on all corners of the stool.

Decorate The Stool The Right Way

Don't place the idols on the stool as is. Take some rose petals and spread them all over the wooden stool. According to astrology, placing some coriander leaves is also beneficial.

Use The Right Puja Ingredients

Do not perform puja without placing a pot next to the idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh. Take a kalash or pot, and add in haldi (raw turmeric), silver coin, rice, flowers, and mango leaves into it. Cover it with a silver bowl and place a coconut wrapped in red coloured cloth on the pot, it is considered auspicious. The coconut should be placed in a way that it faces you.

Avoid Cleaning Up Immediately

A lot of people have a habit of cleaning up the temple or puja area after performing all the Diwali rituals. Astrologically, it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi comes into our homes after we perform Puja, stays there for a while to shower blessings, and then leaves. It is inauspicious to clean your home right after Puja.
