She left behind North Korean gymnasts Kim Son Hyang (13.466) and Jo Kyong Byol (12.966), who bagged silver and bronze medals, respectively, reports Times of India. For Dipa, who narrowly missed an Olympic medal with a fourth-place finish in the vault final at the 2016 Rio Olympics, this gold is a sweet testament to her resilience and unwavering determination.
As per Times of India, Dipa's achievement builds upon India's growing gymnastics legacy. Ashish Kumar earned a bronze medal in individual floor exercise at the 2015 Asian Championships, while Pranati Nayak also won bronze medals in the vault event in the 2019 and 2020 editions, the publication notes.
The Sports Authority of India took to Twitter to laud Dipa's historic feat, stating, "History created at The Asian Gymnastics Championship. Inspirational, Dipa! Congratulations on the #Gold."
