Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2024: History And Significance
Breast cancer accounts for one in eight cancer cases in both men and women, affecting 2.3 million people globally every year. The main reasons behind the rise of this disease are barriers within the health system and low awareness among people. Early detection and treatment are the best ways to combat this disease. Unfortunately, it is often diagnosed at late stages, leading to poor outcomes and higher mortality rates. The American Cancer Society started a week-long Breast Cancer Awareness campaign back in 1985. This was in partnership with Imperial Chemical Industries but the campaign soon turned into a month-long event. According to Breastcancer.org, this then continued every year, and in 1992, the pink ribbon symbol of breast cancer awareness started when Alexandra Penney, SELF magazine's Editor-in-Chief, partnered with Evelyn Lauder, Estée Lauder's Senior Corporate Vice President and a breast cancer survivor, to distribute pink ribbons after the magazine’s second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month issue. Since then, Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been celebrated every year in October, with the pink ribbon being the symbol for the event.

According to the World Health Organisation, the theme for Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2024 is "No one should face breast cancer alone." This theme aims to bring attention to the silent struggles faced by survivors and patients who may feel isolated and unsupported due to the disease. October 17 to 23 is recognised as Men's Breast Cancer Awareness Week. Although the disease mostly affects women, men also experience it. This week aims to raise awareness about breast cancer in men, transgender men, and non-binary individuals.
