The new statue of the ‘Lady of Justice’in the Supreme Court’s library, was reportedly commissioned at the orders of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. Some media publications have reported that this is an attempt to move on from the British colonial legacy towards a country with a justice system that isn’t blind and sees everyone equally.
As reported by NDTV, a source said, “Therefore, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said thatthe form of the Lady of Justice should be changed. He said the statue should have the Constitution in one hand and not a sword so that a message goes out to the country that she dispenses justice according to the Constitution. The sword symbolises violence but courts deliver justice according to constitutional laws.”
The Lady Justice is believed to be a representative personification of the justice system in India and the origin of the statue lies in the Roman art known as Justitia. According to reports, “Justitia is the personification of Justice in ancient Rome, equivalent to the Greek goddess Dike/Astraea.”

“The blindfold stood for ‘Justice will be served for all irrespective of their race, religion, gender, etc… that is equality’ what now??,” wrote another.
Gulfeshan Jawed, a lawyer at the Supreme Court, said, “It signifies the new era of justice dispensation where law considers and analyses the facts and evidence with open eyes. It is based on the legal philosophy that justice should not only be done but also seems to be done. Merely following the rules in its straight jacket formula would not suffice for the needs of society, but justice should be done logically, rationally, and fairly. The step taken by the Hon’ble Supreme Court is courageous and a positive message sent to the society that in India now, there is no rule by law but the rule of law.”
Dr Rennie Joyy, Lawyer and Founder of Aalekh Foundation, shared, “The symbolic shift from a blindfolded Lady Justice to one with open eyes, as highlighted by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, is a powerful reflection of modern judicial values. Traditionally, the blindfold represented impartiality, suggesting that justice does not see external factors like wealth, status, or power. However, CJI Chandrachud’s statement, “The law is not blind; it sees everyone equally,” offers a refreshed perspective, emphasising that justice aims to be impartial, actively aware, and responsive to diverse social realities.
“In today’s complex world, an open-eyed approach suggests a more nuanced understanding of fairness—one that acknowledges the unique contexts of individuals who come before the law. This change symbolises a judiciary that is vigilant, empathetic, and informed about the challenges faced by marginalised groups. By seeing everyone equally, justice does not ignore differences but seeks to understand and address them within its framework. This vision encourages a legal system that is proactive in ensuring that equality is not just an ideal but a lived reality for all citizens. The open-eyed Lady Justice represents a judiciary that is committed to transparency, inclusivity, and a dynamic interpretation of fairness in an ever-evolving society,” she added.
