Expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar Convicted For Raping Minor From Unnao in 2017

Seven years since Nirbhaya rape case today on December 16, when India is struggling for women's safety, cases after cases are flooding in, Four-time BJP MLA from UP's Bangermau, expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar has been convicted by Delhi court for raping an Unnao woman in 2017 when she was a minor. However, what kind of punishment shall be meted out to him will be known on December 2019. 

The man was framed with charges by the court on August 9 under Sections 120 b (criminal conspiracy), 363 (kidnapping), 366 (kidnapping or inducing a woman to compel for marriage), 376 (rape) and other sections which come under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

After the convict was transferred to Delhi from the Lucknow court on August 5 on Supreme Court's directions,  District Judge Dharmesh Sharma heard the case on a day-to-day basis.

As reported by news agencies, on July 28 this year, the car of the survivor who was a minor when she was raped, was hit by a truck and she was severely injured. The woman's two aunts were killed in the accident and her family claimed foul play.

The girl's father was also allegedly framed in an illegal arms case and arrested on April 3, 2018. He sadly died while in judicial custody a few days later, on April 9.

The local court framed the MLA and his brother for murder and other charges.

On August 1 all five cases registered in connection with the Unnao rape incident were transferred from a Lucknow court in Uttar Pradesh to Delhi. During the trial in the rape case, thirteen prosecution witnesses and nine defence witnesses were examined. The mother of the rape survivor and her uncle were the main witnesses in the case, as reported by news agencies.

Infact, a special court was also held at AIIMS hospital in Delhi to record the statement of the rape survivor. She was air-lifted from a hospital in Lucknow. The survivor and her family have been provided with CRPF security as per the apex court's orders.
