Platforms like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) were flooded with conspiracy theories and dark jokes about Annabelle’s influence. However, local authorities and NESPR both denied any connection, reiterating that the doll had remained secure throughout.
Who Was Dan Rivera, Annabelle’s Handler?
Dan Rivera was more than just a tour guide, he was the official caretaker of Annabelle and a respected figure in the paranormal investigation world. Based in Connecticut, he had been personally mentored by Lorraine Warren, the famed demonologist. Rivera also served as the lead investigator for NESPR and played a major role in the planning and execution of the Devils on the Run tour.
At the Gettysburg event, held in a reportedly haunted orphanage, Rivera greeted guests with humour and warmth. According to The Evening Sun, he told attendees, “I want you guys to have a good time,” before leading them to the doll’s viewing chamber.

Rivera was very serious about safety protocols. He described the case he designed to house Annabelle, constructed with stained wood infused with holy water and adorned with three crosses to symbolise the Holy Trinity.
He also reassured attendees that the doll had nothing to do with recent viral stories, stating jokingly: “We did not burn down that plantation,” and “We did not free those prisoners.” Rivera even referenced a strange 911 outage in Pennsylvania, which many tried to connect to Annabelle, saying that she had no role in it either.
He concluded the session by sharing advice from Lorraine Warren about spiritual protection, recommending guests imagine themselves surrounded by a halo of white light.
Dan Rivera’s Death: What We Know So Far
Rivera tragically passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in Gettysburg. According to the Pennsylvania State Police, he was found unresponsive in his hotel room by staff. Officials stated there were no signs of foul play, and nothing unusual was discovered at the scene. The cause of death is pending, awaiting further investigation.
